Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Borneo Giant x
Alocasia nycteris 'Batwing'
This Alocasia hybrid is another one of our 2007 successes, one of two successful hybridization done using Alocasia nycteris 'Batwing' as the pollen parent. While this one has Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Borneo Giant' as the ovule parent, the other cross used Alocasia odora as the ovule parent. So far, this hybrid shows more of the characteristics of the "batwing" leaf shape.
These plants are not full grown, but the distinctive leaf shape is already showing, along with the petiole mottling.
Above is a close-up view of a leaf on the selection I have chosen to call Alocasia "Manta Ray". This particular seedling did the best of all of them in the January and February 2009 cold spells here in south Florida.
Below can be seen both an open inflorescence at female anthesis and an unopened inflorescence on Alocasia "Manta Ray".
